Ein würdiges Gedenken an die Pogromnacht, dargeboten in einem beeindruckenden Programm! Babette Dorn hatte wunderbare Klaviermusik ausgewählt und vorgespielt, Rudolf Kurz hatte mit der Kirchentür von Langenburg, mit seinem Denkmal für das Konzentrationslager Hailfingen/Tailfingen sowie mit den Bildern vom „Heiligen Sand“ in Worms die „Bilder an der Wand“ beigefügt und Karl-Josef Kuschel verband dies alles durch seine tiefgründigen Interpretationen. Hier sind einige Gedanken zusammengefasst.

Der brennende Dornbusch markiert die Berufung des Mose im Buch Exodus; das Feuer zeigt die göttliche Präsenz an. Es ist gleichzeitig das Medium der Gottespräsenz und der Reinigung. Und so geht es auch den Menschen, die die Langenburger Kirche betreten – sie sollen erkennen, dass sie einen besonderen Schritt tun. Die hebräischen Buchstaben zeigen jedoch auch, dass sich die Christen daran erinnern sollen, dass ihr Gott auch der Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Jakobs ist.

Durch den Lichteinfall wird noch ein weiteres Zeichen sichtbar, das Menetekel, welches dem babylonischen König Belsatzar gezeigt wurde, nachdem dieser den Frevel begangen hatte, die Gefäße aus dem Jerusalemer Tempel für ein Weingelage zu missbrauchen. An dieser Stelle wurde die fesselnde Ballade von Heinrich Heine zitiert, unter anderem diese Verse:

… Jehova! Dir künd‘ ich auf ewig Hohn, –
Ich bin der König von Babylon!
Doch kaum das grause Wort verklang,
Dem König ward’s heimlich im Busen bang.
Das gellende Lachen verstummte zumal;
Es wurde leichenstill im Saal.
Und sieh! und sieh! an weißer Wand
Da kam’s hervor wie Menschenhand;
Und schrieb, und schrieb an weißer Wand
Buchstaben von Feuer, und schrieb und schwand.

Ein Kaddisch heute

Im Winter 1944/1945 wurden 601 Häftlinge jüdischer Herkunft aus ganz Europa nach Hailfingen/Tailfingen gebracht, um den Nachtjägerflugplatz unter unsäglichen Arbeitsbedingungen auszubauen. 200 von ihnen fanden hier den Tod.

Das Mahnmal von Rudolf Kurz erinnert daran, indem die nackte Betonwand für die massenhafte Auslöschung steht und gleichzeitig 10.000 Aluminiumstäbe die Namen der Häftlinge aufzeigen, um sie dem Vergessen zu entreißen.

Worms

Der „Heilige Sand“ und der Dom zu Worms haben für Martin Buber eine eigentümliche Verbindung. Der Dom ist „eine sichtbar gewordene Harmonie“ und der jüdische Friedhof besteht aus „schiefen, zerspellten, formlosen, richtungslosen Steinen“. Ihm ist, als sähe er von Israel zur Kirche auf. Aber dennoch ist ihm  „nicht gekündigt worden“.

In Worms steht die älteste Synagoge auf deutschem Boden – sie stammt von 1034, hier lehrte mit Rabbi Salomon Ben Isaak der bekannteste jüdische Schriftgelehrte, genannt „Raschi“. Und der älteste Grabstein des jüdischen Friedhofs verweist ins Jahr 1058/59.

Der jüdische Friedhof mit seinem Gewirr steht dem Dom mit seiner Harmonie gegenüber. Durch die pure Existenz hält „Israel“ der Kirche den Spiegel einer unerlösten Welt vor. Gleichzeitig ist das jüdische Volk das von Gott auserwählte, das einzigartige und geliebte Volk! Diese Zusage gilt weiterhin – es heißt sogar abschließend „Aber gekündigt ist uns nicht“!

Kuschel liest in Bubers Text weiterhin, dass sowohl das Volk Israel als auch die Kirche ihr je eigenes unverwechselbares Gottesgeheimnis hat. Beide wissen sich gehalten von Gott.

Glücklich kehrte eine kleine, aber feine Exkursionsgruppe am Sonntagabend, den 19. Oktober 2025 aus Schwäbisch Hall zurück. Hinter ihnen lag ein voller Tag in der Salzsiederstadt am Kocher – den einige Tapfere sogar noch mit einem Besuch der Stadtkirche St. Michael bzw. mit einem Museumsbesuch bei den Alten Meistern in der Johanniterkirche gekrönt hatten. 

Vormittags wurde das Hällisch-Fränkische Museum besucht, um mit der Lage der kleinen Stadt im steilen Kochertal und mit der im Haalbrunnen anstehenden Sole vertraut zu werden. Eingehend gewürdigt wurden die fast 300 Jahre alten Malereien, die der Künstler Elieser Sußmann in Unterlimpurg auf den hölzernen Wänden einer kleinen Haussynagoge in der Nähe der Reichsstadt angebracht hatte. Der erstaunliche Farben- und Formenreichtum der Synagogenvertäfelungen sowie die vielen auf den Wänden angebrachten Gebete in hebräischer Sprache faszinierten die Betrachterinnen und Betrachter.

Zum Mittagessen ging es über den Kocher in den Traditionsgasthof Zum Löwen, wo leckeres Essen und erfrischende Getränke die Grundlage für die nachmittägliche Stadtführung legten. Stadtführerin Amthor erläuterte uns kenntnisreich den Marktplatz, das ursprüngliche jüdische Viertel (erste Erwähnungen jüdischen Lebens in Hall stammen aus dem Jahr 1241) sowie Wohn- und Wirtshäuser auf der unteren und oberen Herrengasse, bis die Gruppe wieder an der Michaelskirche stand. Auf dem Weg wurden viele Geschichten über Jüdinnen und Juden erzählt, die die Stadtgeschichte geprägt haben – sei es als Ärzte oder Händler, als Kaufleute oder Schankwirte.

Die Nazis haben in Hall nach 1933 sehr rasch begonnen, die Juden aus dem öffentlichen Leben heraus zu drängen, viele haben sich dem durch Auswanderung entzogen und die zum Schluss verbliebenen, eher älteren jüdischen Nachbarinnen und Nachbarn wurden deportiert und umgebracht. Zum Schluss wurde auch einer der Täter vorgestellt, der in der SS gedient und Erschießungen in heutigen Ukraine befehligt hatte. Er konnte nach dem Krieg relativ unbehelligt wieder in Hall leben und eine kleine Spirituosenhandlung führen… Beeindruckend, wie viel Geschichte und Geschichten sich hinter der Postkartenidylle dieser viel besuchten Stadt entdecken ließen! 

Der Exkursionstag begann und endete mit erstaunlich komplikationsfreien Zugfahrten von Bietigheim nach Hall und zurück, bei denen sich die Teilnehmenden angeregt in wechselnden Kleingruppen unterhielten.

When I started my FSJ, I already knew that the descendants meeting would take place during my second week of work. Even though I was prepared (somewhat) for it on paper, I was still nervous and rather unsure of what to expect, and how the atmosphere would be like once everyone had arrived.

It’s been a bit since then and if I had to describe the descendants’ meeting now and what I was feeling in one word I would say connection. Connection with the ancestors, and the families, who once lived in Freudental, through the Lines of Life. Connection with the other descendants, who had traveled from across the world to gather here, and also connection with the people who had put in the work to make this meeting possible. It wasn’t just about remembering history, it was about building bridges, between the places, the families, the generations. To embrace the light, after the darkness, like Freudental’s angel of light, who was born by the angel of darkness.

Probably the most impressive moment for me was walking along the Lines of Life, together with the descendants and seeing the families whose ancestors are buried there, walk along the lines that link them to Freudental, and each other. Some lines even circled back to the same person, showing how relatives being separated by oceans still shared a common ancestor in this tiny town, where they now met again, generations later. I truly understood why the cemetery is referred to as “Beit Chaim”, the “House of Life”.

Though there were a lot more memorable moments connected to the meeting. Like David Rubins Art exhibit, with the “Freudental angel of darkness”, who birthed the angel of light, capturing the feeling of loss and now hope that the descendants feel is connected to Freudental.

And like the Art exhibition, the Shabbat prayer on Friday, will be a memory that I’ll carry on, how there was a single last ray of sunshine, that perfectly illuminated Mark in particular, while he sang. Equally important to me were the personal encounters. I was worried that the interactions would be distant and formal, but instead they were warm and personal, often joyful, despite the past. I’ll probably always remember the family dinner with the Rubins, where the three kids made an instant German friend, as they played together and connected without a shared language.

One more moment that stood out to me was the tree planting. It really symbolizes leaving a living piece behind in Freudental, one that will continue to grow and carry the memory of their ancestors and the memory of the meeting into the future. It reflects what the whole meet up was about: Roots, growth, continuity and connection.

Looking back, I realize how the descendants’ meeting connected much more than just relatives with their ancestors. It connected people across borders, across generations, across oceans, and across experiences, similar to the idea of the Lines of Life. It’s a connection we share, to the ancestors, to the cemetery, to Freudental, and to each other.

Vier Ausnahmemusikerinnen, die ganz fein aufeinander hören und miteinander harmonieren, haben am 21. September 2025 das Publikum in der ehemaligen Synagoge verzaubert. Klezmers Techter treten als Trio auf mit der überaus virtuosen Gabriela Kaufmann an Klarinette und Bassklarinette, mit der Energie und Lebensfreude versprühenden Almut Schwab am Akkordeon, am Cymbalon und an den Querflöten und mit der Ruhe, Rhythmus und musikalisches Fundament garantierenden Nina Hacker am Kontrabass. Sie zelebrieren Farb- und Tempowechsel und bringen so den ganzen musikalischen Reichtum der Klezmertradition zum Klingen. 

In ihrem Programm „Shevana“ werden sie aufs Schönste ergänzt von der israelischen Mezzosopranistin Shai Terry – als ob die Formation nur darauf gewartet hätte, die Stimme und den Ausdruck dieser Sängerin mithineinzunehmen in die Bühnengeschichte. Mit den gesungenen Texten berührt die Israelin die Herzen der Zuhörerinnen und Zuhörer. 

Das begeisterte Publikum sang und bewegte sich mit (ganz mutige tanzten sogar Tango!); damit wurden gleichsam alle im Raum zu „Klezmer“, zu einem Gefäß des Liedes. Natürlich gab es am Schluss mehrere schöne Zugaben. Toda raba – vielen Dank!

What is peace? For me, it was tangible in these days with our guests who came to discover their family stories. I’m not resuming the four wonderful days; I only try to highlight some very peaceful moments:

Peace is if a dark angels’ story turns into light within three days. The artwork of David Rubin was (and is still) exhibited in the town hall, but the piece will stay in the community of Freudental all thanks to the donation of Reinhard Maier. The main character on the image is Davids’ brother Mark, the “angel of light” and we know it because he presided the Shabbat prayer in the synagogue sitting in the last sunlight. It seems that we can overcome the sad story of loss, of flight, of negative experiences suffered in the Nazi time by Margot Stein.

Peace is if Israeli and German children play together even if they don’t speak the others language! Peace is juggling together… 

Peace is if people find the courage to look into their own and in their families’ history accepting that we can’t change the past but that we can construct the future. And peace is if others in a friendly manner accompany them to the cemetery.

Peace is to continue to study family trees, to find new links and to complete the “lines of life”. Peace is to connect with the ancestors and their environment.

Peace is inviting strangers to your own house and cook for them. Peace is following an invitation in an unknown household. And peace is to savour good food!

Peace is if people gather in the former synagogue to meditate, to sing and to pray together in the present – not questioning each other if or in what God they believe! The participants of the Sunday morning prayer created a real “Inter-net” while knitting small lines into a big and coloured “hyper-link”.

Peace is watching a film which tells a very personal story of only one person and understanding that this could help us all to better understand our own story. 

Peace is all these very short and fine moments of listening, smiling, speaking a foreign language and welcoming the others – to live in connection. 

Thank you very much for bringing this peace to Freudental, giving it all the deep meanings of the word SCHALOM: joy, wellbeing, physical and emotional integrity, salvation and wholeness.

I wrote this text one week after the descendants meeting while sitting under the fig tree in my garden, Michael.

For many participants, the visit was deeply personal. “It was a mind-blowing experience—my grandmother lived here, and although my mother never wanted me to come, I felt I needed to,”said one. Another shared how the day offered both “a sense of connection and a sense of loss,”helping to piece together parts of the past. For some, the encounter with their roots brought new strength: “I became aware of where I come from. It helps me see the positive things—and it makes clear that we have to act with compassion.”

The gathering was filled with both historical reflection and contemporary resonance. Visitors spoke about their dual identity as both German and Jewish, of past traumas and new beginnings. “My grandmother was German and refused to leave. She survived thanks to her husband. I could never reconcile being Jewish and German—but coming back to Freudental, meeting family connections, I feel the incompatibility is less strong. It gives me hope that living together is possible.” A mother reflected on the stark contrast between past and present: “I think a lot about my grandmother Margot, who walked here in fear. Today, my children have a German passport and feel safe. That is a gift, and I am thankful for this welcoming spirit.”

The community’s warm hospitality left a lasting impression. “We’re impressed by how much energy is put into inviting us. We leave this place with a lot of hope. It is so peaceful here,” said one participant. Others echoed the joy of simply being together: “We’re making connections and feel connected. We don’t forget to remember. I feel at home here.”

The program of the day gave history a living voice:

• Theatre walk with the Last Schammes: Characters from Freudental’s past were brought to life, including Sigmund Lasar, who connected participants with long-gone villagers. The walk wove together joy, sadness, and memories of both destruction and resilience.
• Lines of life at the cemetery: The cemetery tour became a powerful family reunion across generations. With coloured lines guiding the way, descendants found their relatives’ graves, often discovering more ancestors here than anywhere else in the world. “They walked on these same streets, prayed in this same synagogue,” one visitor noted. “It gave me a very comfortable feeling.”
  
• Guided tour of Freudental: Walking the streets and visiting ancestral homes made history tangible. “I’m hungry for this information—it keeps the memories alive,” said one. Another remarked, “I feel more at home walking here than where I live now. That’s wonderful!”
  
• Shabbat prayer in the synagogue: Sitting in the last sunlight, one of the oldest visitors presided the short, but intense moment of prayer and meditation. The synagogue – demolished in 1938 – heard singing and praying again. 

What remains is a shared conviction: that remembrance is not only about looking back, but also about shaping the future. Participants will leave Freudental with gratitude, compassion, and hope—connected to one another, to their ancestors, and to the community that welcomed them.

Or, as one voice summed it up: “Bringing everybody together—that is the lesson we have to learn here.”

Die kleine Gruppe hat viel gelernt, weil die jungen Leute viele kluge Fragen gestellt haben. Auf einem jüdischen Friedhof legen wir Steine ab, um zu zeigen, dass wir da waren. Alle Gräber sind nach Jerusalem ausgerichtet. Jungs und Männer sollen eine Kopfbedeckung tragen, um ihre Ehrfurcht vor Gott als dem Größeren zu zeigen. Bei der intensiven Beschäftigung haben wir gemerkt, dass einige Gräber langsam zugewachsen sind und die Grabsteine zum Teil abbröckeln. Man sieht an den reparierten Grabsteinen, dass der Friedhof leider auch schon geschändet, also angegriffen wurde – das war im Jahr 2007. Ein ganz besonderes Grab ist dasjenige von Julius Marx, der auch das Gedicht „Oh Du mein kleines Dorf“ geschrieben hat. 

Für das Nachfahrentreffen vom 11. – 14. September 2025 hat die Gruppe bunte Linien gespannt und damit Stammbäume nachvollziehbar und sichtbar gemacht. Die vielen Farben zeigen 

• die Verbindungen der auf dem Friedhof begrabenen Generationen untereinander,
• die Verbindungen der Nachfahren aus aller Welt mit Freudental und
• die Verbindung der jungen Forscherinnen und Forscher mit dem jüdischen Friedhof!

Rabbiner Jechiel Brukner ist in Zürich aufgewachsen. Er studierte in der Schweiz und in Israel, wo er auch lange unterrichtete. Nach dieser Arbeit an einem israelischen Jeschiwa-Gymnasium kam Jechiel Brukner 2008 an eine Jeschiwa (das ist eine jüdische Hochschule) nach München. Von 2018 bis 2025 betreute er die Kölner Synagogengemeinde. Rabbiner Brukner und seine Frau Sara haben sechs Kinder und 16 Enkelkinder und leben nun wieder in Israel.
